Australia has the largest greyhound racing industry in the world, with more tracks operating here than in all other countries combined. It’s a national shame—we’re now one of only four countries where commercial greyhound racing is still legal.

Behind the scenes, this industry continues to cause immense suffering. In 2024, 128 greyhounds died on Australian racetracks, and a staggering 11,445 injuries were recorded. Many healthy dogs are bred for racing but aren’t registered to compete, and can disappear without a trace. Those who are registered are often given banned substances such as cocaine, amphetamines, and Viagra to make them run faster.

The Australian greyhound racing industry still allows the export of dogs for commercial racing and breeding. Loopholes in the Australian regulations mean they could reach countries such as China to be exploited in their illegal underground racing industry. In a Senate inquiry in October 2023, Greyhounds Australasia admitted that 464 Australian greyhounds have been exported illegitimately since 2015.

Despite years of inquiries and promises to reform, the industry remains broken—and it’s being propped up with taxpayer money in several states. The public has lost confidence in greyhound racing, and there is no social licence for its continuation.

It’s time for state governments to act.

We’re calling on state MPs to support a ban on greyhound racing, and to redirect public funding toward greyhound rescue and rehoming instead. The ACT has already banned greyhound racing, and international momentum is growing. Let’s not be left behind.
