Wildlife Land Trust / Sanctuaries / WA / Millieroo Retreat

Brian and Sonia Cooke are the owners of Millieroo Retreat, a property situated in Chittering, approximately 65km northeast of Perth, Western Australia. The property is a wildlife sanctuary and has been a rehabilitation site for rescued wildlife since the 1970s. Millieroo Retreat is permanently protected by a covenant which was implemented by the original owner. Brian and Sonia wish to create a refuge for a wide range of native species, providing a thriving habitat for wildlife and serving as an example for wildlife-friendly landowners in the region.

The property spans 31 hectares and is comprised of eucalypt woodlands and native grasslands interspersed with granite outcrops and creeks.

A wide range of wildlife is present including western grey kangaroos (Macropus fuliginosus), common wallaroos (Macropus robustus), brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula), western pygmy (Cercartetus concinnus) and honey (Tarsipes rostratus) possums and a variety of native birds including Carnaby’s black-cockatoos (Calyptorhynchus latirostris). The property is also home to an array of reptiles including shingleback lizards (Tiliqua rugosa), geckos and native snakes.
