Each year, millions of dogs and cats are subjected to extreme suffering and cruelty as they are killed for human consumption across countries such as South Korea, Indonesia, Viet Nam, India and China.
Humane World for Animals is at the forefront of ending this cruel trade. We’ve already achieved a landmark victory with South Korea passing legislation to ban the dog meat trade by 2027. Now, we’re intensifying our efforts in Viet Nam and Indonesia, where beloved pets are still being stolen and sent for slaughter.
Doban was one of 200 dogs rescued from a South Korean dog meat farm in 2023. When our team found him, he was in a tiny wire cage, surrounded by filth and suffering. The conditions at the farm were some of the worst our team had ever seen.
Following his rescue, Doban was brought to our Canadian care and rehabilitation centre, where he received veterinary care and behavioural therapy. Today, he has been adopted into a loving home in Montreal and is thriving with his new family.
While we think long-term to create far-reaching, systemic changes, we also have team members right now who are working tirelessly on the ground. Together, they are making the urgent and immediate rescue of taken and abused pets that really just belong back in their warm, loving home.
Animal Welfare Campaigner Georgie Dolphin recently returned from South Korea, where she witnessed the heartbreaking reality of the dog meat trade. One image that stuck with her: a bag filled with discarded collars, silent proof of those already lost.
But there is hope. Thanks to our Models for Change program, thousands of dogs have been rescued, and a nationwide ban on the trade will soon take effect.
Boba was rescued from Viet Nam where he was destined for the cat meat trade. After being saved from a brutal fate, he was flown to Washington DC to begin his new life.

Our legal and policy experts work alongside local partners to draft and advocate for legislation that protects dogs and cats from the meat trade. In Indonesia, we have helped 88 jurisdictions pass regulations that restrict or prohibit the trade.
Now, we’re pushing for national laws to explicitly ban the dog and cat meat trade nationwide. With your support, we can create permanent change through legal reform across the region.
Money donated is put immediately into animal protection, wildlife conservation and environmental programs in Australia and overseas. Most of our income comes from individual donors. Donations are used to fund our animal protection and wildlife projects supporting wildlife rescue centres, rehabilitation and release programs for endangered wild animals, and the investigation of wildlife crime. Your contributions allow us to deliver disaster relief efforts where and when they are needed. They support our work to protect wildlife habitat in Australia and overseas, with initiatives such as the Wildlife Land Trust helping private landholders protect the wildlife habitat on their land. Donations made to disaster appeals are restricted to funding disaster response, except for new monthly donations which help to fund ongoing work to protect animals.
