Wildlife Land Trust / Sanctuaries / WA / Sunnydews

Alicia Sutton and Brett Ponsonby are the owners of Sunnydews a property situated in Sunnyside approximately 12kms southeast of Bridgetown, Western Australia. The property is currently used for recreation and is being revegetated. The owners intend to build a sustainable off-grid house on the property as well as revegetate most of the land, turn the degraded dam into wetland in addition to adding orchid trees and vegetable gardens.

Sunnydews spans 32 hectares. The land has been previously used for animal agriculture (cows and sheep) and is currently comprised of 50% pasture and 50% remnant native bushland. The property is sloped with granite boulders, seasonal creek lines, a dam, and a seasonal tributary of the Blackwood River. The property features Eucalypt Woodland including jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata), yarri (Eucalyptus patens), marri (Corymbia calophylla) and wandoo (Eucalyptus wandoo). An extensive range of wildlife is found at Sunnydews, including brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula), kangaroos (Macropus fuliginosus), red-tailed black cockatoos (Calyptorhynchus banksii), Carnaby’s black cockatoos (Zanda latirostris), tawny frogmouths (Podargus strigoides), magpies (Gymnorhina tibicen), ravens (Corvus coronoides), Australian ringneck parrots (Platycercus zonarius), western rosella (Platycercus icterotis), black-faced cuckoo shrikes (Coracina novaehollandiae), Australian wood ducks (Chenonetta jubata), yellow-rumped thornbills (Acanthiza chrysorrhoa), Australian boobooks (Ninox boobook), quails, western gerygones (Gerygone fusca), silvereyes (Zosterops lateralis), barn owls (Tyto alba), wedge tailed eagle pairs (flying overhead) (Aquila audax), other birds of prey, bobtail lizards (Tiliqua rugosa), quacking froglets (Crinia georgiana), masked bees (Hylaeus spp.) and other native bees, Christmas spiders (Austracantha minax), wolf spiders (Lycosidae spp).
