Wildlife Land Trust / Sanctuaries / VIC / Kanela and Steven’s Refuge

Kanela and Steven Nelson are the owners of a property situated in Colac-Otway Shire, approximately 80km east of Warrnambool, Victoria. The property is a holiday home and dedicated wildlife sanctuary, and the owners wish to maintain the land for the benefit of wildlife, particularly koala habitat. The property is subject to a Vegetation Protection Overlay.

The property covers approximately 2 hectares of remnant bushland set on an ancient volcanic lava flow. Vegetation is largely comprised of eucalypt woodland interspersed with blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon).

A wide variety of native species are present including koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus), eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganetus), swamp wallabies (Wallabia bicolor) and short-beaked echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus), as well as a range of native birds and snakes.
