Catherine Thora Nelson is the owner of Eungaia, a property situated in Eungai Creek, southwest of Macksville, New South Wales. The property is a wildlife sanctuary and was purchased in 1994 as a wildlife corridor from Tamban State Forest to Yarrahapinni Mountain and the ocean. Catherine intends to establish Eungaia as a wildlife sanctuary. Eungaia is part of the Land for Wildlife conservation program.
Eungaia spans 13.36 hectares across multiple ecological vegetation classes. The majority of the land is considered Wet Sclerophyll Forest, predominantly the plant community type Northern Turpentine-Brush Box Wet Forest and Northern Foothills Blackbutt Grassy Forest. Other vegetation classes on the property include subtropical rainforest and coastal floodplain wetlands. Native flora found on the property include bracken fern (Pteridium esculentum) tallow wood (Eucalyptus microcorys) and flooded gum (Eucalyptus grandis).
An extensive and growing number of wildlife is found at Eungaia, including brown snakes (Pseudonaja textiles), red-bellied black snakes (Pseudechis porphyriacus), carpet pythons (Morelia spilota), lace monitor lizards (Varanus varius), echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus), wallabies, eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus), antechinus, bandicoots, phascogales and birdlife such as Regent bowerbirds (Sericulus chrysocephalus), satin bowerbirds (Ptilonorhynchus violaceus), finches, wrens and owls.
