About the sanctuary

Montana Campbell and Israel Palacios are the owners of Dondingalong Retreat, a property situated in Dondingalong, approximately 50km north of Port Macquarie, New South Wales. The property is a wildlife sanctuary and tourist retreat. Montana and Israel plan to improve the property’s habitat by removing invasive species including lantana and planting locally indigenous species.

The property covers 9.92 hectares of woodland gently sloping to a dam in the centre of the block. Vegetation is largely comprised of eucalypt woodland, including tallowwood and bloodwood species.

An abundance of wildlife is found on the block including eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus), red-necked (Macropus rufogriseus) and swamp (Wallabia bicolor) wallabies, flying-foxes, frogs, lace monitors (Varanus varius), green tree snakes (Dendrelaphis punctulata) and diamond pythons (Morelia spilota).

A wide range of birdlife is also present including kingfishers, king parrots (Alisterus scapularis), bowerbirds, red-browed finches (Neochmia temporalis), black cockatoos, eastern spinebills (Acanthorhynchus tenuirostris), Lewin’s honeyeaters (Meliphaga lewinii) and white-throated gerygones (Gerygone olivacea).
