The Sanctuary
Jenny Hanson is the owner of Soul Kindle Sanctuary, a property situated in Baillieston, approximately 60km southwest of Shepparton, Victoria. The property is a residence and wildlife sanctuary, and Jenny is also a foster carer for wildlife. Jenny wishes to improve the local community’s attitude towards native wildlife and in the future intends to sell the property to a wildlife-friendly buyer. Since she has lived in the property, biodiversity has improved and local native species are now beginning to return.
Soul Kindle Sanctuary covers approximately 6.47 hectares across a narrow block backing onto a reserve. The property is situated in historic gold country, and gold mining is still underway in neighbouring properties. Although the ground is dry and rocky, the property is well forested and surrounded by kangaroo-friendly fencing. Vegetation is dominated by eucalypts, grass trees (Xanthorrhoea spp.), golden everlasting (Xerochrysum bracteatum) and drooping cassinia (Cassinia arcuata), as well as various native shrubs and orchids.
An abundance of wildlife is present on the property including short-beaked echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus), swamp wallabies (Wallabia bicolor), eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus), bare-nosed wombats (Vombatus ursinus), lace monitors (Varanus varius), microbats, geckos, snakes, spiders and scorpions.
A variety of birdlife is present including tawny frogmouths (Podargus strigoides), welcome swallows (Hirundo neoxena), magpies (Cracticus tibicen), white-winged choughs (Corcorax melanorhamphos), sulphur-crested cockatoos (Cacatua galerita), galahs (Eolophus roseicapilla), owls, eagles and wrens. Emus (Dromaius novaehollandiae) have also been sighted near the property.
