Wendy Garcia and Matt Haidn are the owners of GeRu Wildlife Sanctuary, a property located approximately 110km northwest of Bundaberg. The property is a dedicated wildlife sanctuary, and it is Wendy and Matt’s intent to revegetate GeRu Wildlife Sanctuary in an effort to attract and better support the needs of native wildlife species. They also plan to use the property for wildlife rehabilitation, education and ongoing conservation efforts, and as a future residence and small scale eco-friendly bed and breakfast.
The property covers 16.3 undeveloped hectares, the majority of which was formerly grazing farmland that has been left to naturally regenerate for approximately 20 years. A range of several habitat types predominantly comprised of eucalypt, riparian and wetland vegetation are present, and a large dam provides a year-round source of water for the wildlife present.
Wildlife species known to inhabit GeRu Wildlife Sanctuary include swamp wallabies (Wallabia bicolor), eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus), and a variety of native birdlife and freshwater fish species. There is evidence of bare-nosed wombat (Vombatus ursinus) and koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) presence, and Wendy and Matt intend to conduct detailed wildlife surveys in an effort to better understand which species inhabit the property.
