Sarah Mchiggins and Charles Jordan are the owners of Wattlebird Wildlife Sanctuary a rural-lifestyle property situated in Chittering approximately 10kms northeast of Perth, Western Australia. The property is a conservation of native bushland and wildlife habitat that owners Sarah and Charles purchased for its rural character, biodiversity values and peaceful natural environment. The property also forms part of a broader ecological corridor connecting surrounding bushland and conservation areas. The owners’ future intentions are to permanently protect and enhance the property’s environmental values while building their family home in a low-impact manner that is compatible with the surrounding natural environment. They are committed to conserving native vegetation, protecting wildlife habitat and mature trees, maintaining ecological connectivity, and improving biodiversity through responsible land stewardship for future generations. The owners are also pursuing protecting the land through a state government covenant.
Wattlebird Wildlife Sanctuary spans 2 hectares. The land features native eucalypt woodland, banksia woodland, marri (Corymbia calophylla), jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata), native shrubs, understory vegetation, native grasses and seasonal wildflowers. The property also contains mature trees with potential nesting hollows and important foraging habitat for black cockatoos and other hollow-dependent species.
The land provides habitat for a range of species including Carnaby’s black cockatoos (Zanda latirostris), red-tailed black cockatoos (Calyptorhynchus banksii), kangaroos (Macropus fuliginosus), echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus), reptiles including bobtails (Tiliqua rugosa) and snakes, numerous native birds, frogs and a variety of native pollinators and insects.
