Sarah Bonney is the owner of Birdwood, a property situated in Underwood, approximately 7kms north of Launceston, Tasmania. The property is comprised of 60% native forest and 40% open grassland, two dams as well as flat and undulating land and gullies. The property owners have owned the property for six months and are currently using the land for recreation but have already begun making a positive impact on the land by removing weed species. The owner intends to continue with conservation, preservation and land rehabilitation on the property, having joined Tree Alliance to manage trees on the land. Birdwood is currently being assessed to join the Land for Wildlife program, with the adjoining property already being part of Land for Wildlife.
Birdwood spans 17 hectares across Eucalyptus obliqua forest with broad leaf shrubs Eucalyptus amygdalina forest and woodland on dolerite Eucalyptus viminalis wet forest as well as cleared native grassland that is being regenerated. The property provides habitat for a range of species including bare-nosed wombats (Vombatus ursinus), bandicoots, echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus), quolls (Dasyurus sp.), pademelons (Thylogale billardierii), wallabies, forester kangaroos (Macropus giganteus), bettongs (Bettongia gaimardi), wedge-tailed eagles (Aquila audax fleayi), boobook owls (Ninox leucopsis), pallid cuckoos (Cacomantis pallidus), brush bronzewings (Phaps elegans), collared sparrowhawks (Tachyspiza cirrocephala), fan-tailed cuckoos (Cacomantis flabelliformis), robins (Petroica sp.), wrens (Malurus sp.), fantails (Rhipidura sp.), spinebills (Acanthorhynchus tenuirostris), silvereyes (Zosterops lateralis), rosellas (Platycercus sp.), pardalotes, parrots, magpies, currawongs and more.
