Calves as young as 3-4 months of age are subjected to a terrifying ordeal in the rodeo event known as ‘calf roping’, or ‘rope and tie’. It’s time for this torturous spectacle to end.
You can help by calling on state ministers to outlaw this so-called ‘sport’.Â
Calf roping is when the young calf is released from a chute and chased by a competitor on horseback. Against the clock, the competitor aims to lasso the calf around the neck, dismount, run to the calf and throw them onto their side to tie three of their legs together.Â
The poor terrified calves often suffer with damage to their windpipes from the lasso, bruising, broken ribs from being violently jerked off their feet, and injuries associated with choking and strangulation. They are finally dragged along the ground which is the part that is described as ‘horizonal hanging’.Â
Numerous scientific studies show calves suffer both physical injuries and mental distress and fear when roped at these events. Some might even be subjected to roping multiple times in one day.Â
Calf roping and rodeos are prohibited entirely in the ACT, and in both Victoria and South Australia there are weight restrictions in place which effectively ban the event. Bans in New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania, Western Australia and the Northern Territory are long overdue. Â
Please join us by calling on your state minister to update their state legislation and prohibit calf roping.Â
State legislation needs to ban calf roping and all rodeo events.
Calves are suffering in calf roping events in most states of Australia. If you live in NSW, QLD, TAS, WA or the NT, please help these poor animals by calling on your state minister to end this dangerous and outdated event!Â
