Iceland grants five-year whaling permit.

STATEMENT: We are utterly dismayed by the interim Icelandic government’s decision to grant a five-year whaling licence to kill fin and minke whales.

Humane Society International and the Avaaz platform have together collected more than 2.2 million petition signatures calling for whaling to end in Iceland.

We had attempted several times to formally submit the petition to Iceland’s Prime Minister, but he showed no interest in accepting it.

Iceland only just completed its general election, and a coalition government is set to be formed comprising three anti-whaling parties, so it is totally unacceptable for this licence to kill to have been cynically pushed through before the new government has a chance to take over.

Nicola Beynon, Head of Campaigns for HSI Australia said, “Commercial whaling is in conflict with conservation, public opinion and animal welfare law and it must end.”
