HSI Australia is deeply concerned over reports that the Prime Minister will weaken the proposed Environment Protection Australia (EPA) to appease big business and vested interests.
At a time when Australia should be strengthening its protection of wildlife and making good on its promise of no more extinctions, HSI Australia believes any weakening of a proposed strong and independent EPA is a backward step, and one that could have a negative and irreversible impact on our native wildlife.
Australia’s native animals are dependent on our decision makers for their survival. It is crucial the Prime Minister remains true to his word and elevates Australia to a position of global leadership regarding the protection of nature, and not one of leadership in modern day extinctions as we continue to neglect our native wildlife.
Ms Nicola Beynon, Head of Campaigns said:
“Australia’s native animals are in a David and Goliath battle with big business and vested interests. The Prime Minister must stand by his government’s promise to protect them with strong nature laws and an independent decision-making authority.”
“We call on the Parliament to work together to strengthen the proposed EPA, and deliver a framework better equipped to tackle the extinction crisis. “
