Wildlife Land Trust / Sanctuaries / NSW / Northern Shelter

Tristan Lavery is the owner of Northern Shelter, a property situated in the Byron Bay Shire, New South Wales. The property is a wildlife sanctuary and recreation site, also used as a rehabilitation site for rescued wildlife and to house several rescued steers and horses. Tristan plans to maintain Northern Shelter for these purposes and wishes to explore conservation programs to plant more trees and enhance the land’s existing habitat.

The property spans 60 hectares, with two-thirds comprised of pastures, native grasslands and floodplains and the remainder consisting of hilly land with various native forest types.

Wildlife is abundant and includes red-necked (Macropus rufogriseus) and swamp (Wallabia bicolor) wallabies, koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus), bandicoots, grey-headed flying-foxes (Pteropus poliocephalus), microbats, brushtail (Trichosurus vulpecula) and ringtail (Pseudocheirus peregrinus) possums, sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps), snakes and a wide range of native birds.
