Elaine Charles is the owner of Mi Felicidad, a property located in Maleny, approximately 30km West of Caloundra, Queensland. The property was purchased with the intent of being a residence and safe haven for wildlife, and by protecting their habitat Elaine wishes to acknowledge that native wildlife have the same rights to occupy a space as do humans.
The sanctuary covers approximately 0.4 hectares, the center of which is an open space surrounded by much native vegetation, which Elaine has assisted the regeneration of by planting species known to be favoured by koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus). Wildlife species known to be present on the property include the northern brown bandicoot (Isoodon macrourus), short-beaked echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus), Australian swamp rat (Rattus lutreolus) and an abundance of bird species including king parrots (Alisterus scapularis), eastern (Platycercus eximus) and crimson (Platycercus elegans) rosellas, brush-turkeys (Alectura lathami) and many more. Bare-nosed wombats (Vombatus ursinus) have been seen on the property but unfortunately not in the recent past.
