Bruce and Janette Leibhardt are the owners of Kanangra, a property located north of Williamstown, South Australia. The property is a wildlife-friendly sanctuary which was formerly used for sheep grazing and is now regenerating. It is Bruce and Janette’s intent to utilise the property for the benefit of the local environment, which may include introducing of some native ground covers in the future to facilitate regeneration.
Kanangra covers 8 hectares of hilly, former pastureland with patches of scrub and a semi-permanent spring and dam, providing an important water source for local wildlife. Vegetation includes yakka trees (Xanthorrhoea spp.), sheoaks (Casuarina spp.), wattles (Acacia spp.), and a variety of eucalypts (Eucalyptus spp.). Bruce and Janette have also recently planted more than one thousand native trees in the paddock areas of the property with help from ‘Trees for Life.’
Wildlife species known to inhabit the sanctuary include western grey kangaroos (Macropus fuliginosus melanops), short-beaked echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus), koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) and grey-headed flying-foxes (Pteropus poliocephalus).
Bruce and Janette have recently started to identify the abundant birdlife seen on the property which includes red-browed finches (Neochmia temporalis), superb fairy-wrens (Malurus cyaneus), rosellas (Platycercus spp.), tawny frogmouths (Podargus strigoides), eastern spinebills (Acanthorhynchus tenuirostris), New Holland (Phylidonyris novaehollandiae) and singing (Lichenostomus virescens) honeyeaters, Australian magpies (Cracticus tibicen), currawongs (Strepera spp.), scarlet robins (Petroica boodang), kites and eagles.
