The Hills Wildlife Sanctuary is a not-for-profit wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and conservation organisation located on 35 acres of protected bushland in Sydney’s north-west. Since 1977, the sanctuary has provided expert care for injured, orphaned and displaced native wildlife, while also offering a permanent refuge for animals that cannot be returned to the wild. The sanctuary’s mission is to protect Australia’s unique biodiversity through wildlife rehabilitation, threatened species recovery, conservation breeding, environmental education and community engagement, while working towards establishing a world-class wildlife hospital and emergency response centre.
Bordering the Berowra Valley National Park, the sanctuary is a safe haven for an extraordinary diversity of Australian wildlife. More than just a rehabilitation facility, the property supports thriving populations of native mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs and invertebrates, including many species of conservation significance. From eastern pygmy possums (Cercartetus nanus), swamp wallabies (Wallabia bicolor) and echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus) to glossy black-cockatoos (Calyptorhynchus lathami), powerful owls (Ninox strenua), lace monitors (Varanus varius), red-bellied black snakes (Pseudechis porphyriacus), threatened red-crowned toadlets (Pseudophryne australis), and the Endangered Dural land snail (Pommerhelix duralensis), the sanctuary protects vital habitat while inspiring visitors to value and safeguard Australia’s remarkable wildlife.
