Counting the Cull: Queensland’s Shark Control Program and Its Devastating Impact on Marine Life

Humane World for Animals is tallying the wildlife cost of Queensland’s indiscriminate Shark Control Program. The roll call of animals ensnared and drowned in the state’s shark nets and drumlines is a devastating list of sharks, turtles, rays, dolphins and whales; many of them threatened species. We will regularly update the number of animals caught and share that information widely through the media and via our supporters. We will continue to do so until the killing of marine life ends.

Offering hope, the Queensland government has stated they are ‘not opposed to using new methods to fulfil the primary objective of protecting community safety’ and that they are ‘receptive to considering non-lethal alternatives to existing shark control methods.’ Take the action to let the government know you want a modern approach to beach safety that does not involve killing animals.

The impact of shark culling is devastating for marine life. With more effective, scientifically proven solutions that can be implemented right now, that devastation is criminal. You can keep the community safe and end the senseless killing of marine animals. Meanwhile, we’ll keep count.
