Australia is still among the world’s top importers of hunting trophies from protected species — including giraffes, zebras, hippos, and bears. These animals are shot for sport, and their body parts brought back as trophies for display.
That’s not conservation. That’s cruelty.
At the May 2025 federal election, the Albanese Government committed to banning the import of hunting trophies from 19 species, including the American black bear, giraffe, zebra, polar bear, hippopotamus, and others. This is a welcome and important step forward.
But the ban hasn’t been implemented yet.
Every day of delay risks more wildlife being lost to this trade. The Government must act quickly to put the ban into force and send a clear message that Australia will not support trophy hunting.
