Better Wool Tier 1

Includes retailers/brands that meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • They use 100% certified live lamb cut-free wool (non-mulesed) certified by a robust scheme such as the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS), ZQ Merino, NATIVA TM, or an equivalent.
  • They have a policy against sourcing live lamb cut wool (mulesed wool) and are increasingly sourcing wool that is certified by robust schemes such as RWS, ZQ Merino, NATIVA TM, or an equivalent.
  • They aim to reach 100% certified live lamb cut-free wool (using RWS, ZQ Merino, NATIVA TM, or an equivalent) or recycled wool by 2030 or before.
  • They do not source any Australian Merino wool.

Better Wool Tier 2

Includes retailers/brands that:

  • Oppose live lamb cutting or prohibit live cut wool (mulesed), but without using a robust certification scheme (such as RWS, ZQ Merino, NATIVA TM) to help guarantee there is no live cut wool (mulesed) in their supply chain; OR
  • Oppose live lamb cutting or prohibit live cut wool (mulesed), but no certification scheme is specified to help guarantee there is no live cut wool (mulesed) in their supply chain; AND/OR
  • They have no timeline set to phase out live lamb cut wool (mulesed).

Brands and retailers not included in our Better Wool Guide have not developed a policy on live lamb cutting (mulesing) yet, it is not displayed publicly, or HSI Australia is not aware of their position.

DISCLAIMER: The Better Wool Guide initiative encourages brands and retailers to stop sourcing wool from sheep that have undergone live lamb cutting (mulesing), and encourages consumers to support the businesses who have taken a stand against live lamb cutting. It is part of HSI Australia’s efforts to improve the lives of sheep in the wool industry. Whilst care has been taken in the preparation of the contents displayed in this Guide, it is general information only. Brands that are not listed have not communicated a position on live lamb cutting that we are aware of. HSI Australia does not assume or accept any responsibility and shall not be liable for the accuracy or appropriate application of the information displayed. HSI Australia aims to keep this information timely and accurate and if errors are brought to our attention, we will endeavour to correct them in a timely manner.
