Australia must help the global effort to protect rhinos and elephants. Ask the state, territory and federal governments to take The Elephant Pledge.

By taking The Elephant Pledge, governments will commit to:

  1. Give the Australian Government the power to enact national legislation that ensures a consistent and comprehensive ban on domestic trade in ivory and rhino horn across the country.
  2. Develop legislation in our jurisdiction to support this ban, where necessary.
  3. Work to deliver a comprehensive national domestic trade ban in ivory and rhino horn by next year’s World Elephant Day – 12 August 2025.

We need to act now to close the loopholes in Australian laws which enable any elephant ivory and rhino horn trafficked into Australia to be traded domestically.

As long as loopholes remain open, it is easier for poachers and traffickers to find a market. This puts what remains of elephant and rhino populations at risk.

While the UN CITES treaty has banned international trade in ivory across international borders, to be effective, all countries have agreed to close domestic trade within their borders.

The African Elephant Coalition, representing 78% of African countries with elephants, has called on the international community to shut down ivory markets.

Countries including the United States of America, United Kingdom and China have taken action in response. Australia committed to a domestic ban on trade in ivory and rhino horn in 2019, but we are still waiting.

Take action today to ask your state or territory environment minister and the federal environment minister to take The Elephant Pledge and agree to implement a domestic ban on the sale of elephant ivory and rhino horn.
