Lindsay and Carolyn Hook are the owners of Ramsay, a property situated in Hobby’s Yards, approximately 55km southeast of Orange, New South Wales. Originally part of a larger holding, the property is now a residence and wildlife sanctuary as well as a bush regeneration site. Situated within the Kanangra Boyd to Wyangala Link, Ramsay is also a significant habitat corridor for native wildlife, particularly gliders. Lindsay and Carolyn intend to continue revegetating the remainder of the property and wish to offer land for wildlife relocation and rehabilitation in the future. The property is also the subject of a Catchment Management Authority Agreement, in place for 10 years.
The property covers approximately 12.41 hectares of gently undulating land intersected by a natural water course and featuring two dams excluded from livestock. Over the past 16 years, half of the property has undergone extensive revegetation with local native species. This has resulted in a eucalypt woodland dominated by ribbon gums (Eucalyptus viminalis), argyle apples (Eucalyptus cinerea), black sallies (Eucalyptus stellulata), yellow box (Eucalyptus melliodora), red gums (Eucalyptus camaldulensis), stringybark (Eucalyptus tenella) and a variety of bottlebrushes (Castillemon spp.) and wattles (Acacia spp.).
A wide range of wildlife is found on the property including bare-nosed wombats (Vombatus ursinus), short-beaked echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus), eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus), swamp wallabies (Wallabia bicolor) and a range of snakes, frogs, lizards and birds. The recent eucalypt plantings are also starting to attract koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus), and two have been spotted on the property so far.
