Peter Hocking is the owner of Sacred Mirring, a property located 25km southwest of the Grampians (Gariwerd), and 12 km northwest of Hamilton on the Wannon River above Nigretta Falls in Gunditjmara country (Mirring). The property is a residence and dedicated wildlife sanctuary used for wildlife rehabilitation, and it is Peter’s intent to continue to assist the regeneration of native vegetation on the property. Peter is also a member of Land for Wildlife.
The sanctuary covers 3.2 hectares of remnant and regenerating native vegetation including riparian and heathland, with species including river red gum trees (Eucalyptus camaldulensis), cherry ballarts (Exocarpos cupressiformis), small grass trees (Xanthorrhoea minor), prickly moses (Acacia verticillata), river tea-trees (Melaleuca bracteata), nodding greenhood orchids (Pterosylis curta), sun orchids (Thelymitrin ixiodes), running postman (Kennedia prostrata) and blue love creepers (Comesperma volubile).
Wildlife species known to occur on Sacred Mirring include platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus), short-beaked echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus), brushtail (Trichosurus vulpecula) and ringtail (Pseudocheirus peregrinus) possums, sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps), red-necked wallabies (Macropus rufogriseus), eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus), black wallabies (Wallabia bicolor), sulphur-crested cockatoos (Cacatua galerita), crimson rosellas (Platycercus elegans), New Holland honeyeaters (Phylidonyris novaehollandiae), grey fantails (Rhipidura albiscapa) and superb fairywrens (Malurus cyaneus).
