Jan Virgo is the owner of Mirra Booka, a property located in Blanchetown, approximately 120km North-East of Adelaide, South Australia. The property was recently purchased with the intent of being a dedicated native wildlife sanctuary, and Jan aims for it to be used as a rescue and rehabilitation site for native Australian wildlife when it is better established. Jan also has revegetation plans for Mirra Booka.
The sanctuary covers approximately 30.35 hectares of land previously used for sheep grazing, which is generally made up of woodlands and arid mallee scrub. Mallee, saltbush (Atriplex spp.) and wattle trees (Acacia spp.) are dominant. A wide variety of native Australian wildlife is known to be present on the property, including western grey (Macropus fuliginosus) and red (Macropus rufus) kangaroos, bare-nosed wombats (Vombatus ursinia), short-beaked echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus), a variety of lizards and reptiles, and a wide range of bird life such as tawny frogmouths (Podargus strigoides), Australian magpies (Cracticus tibicen) and Australian ravens (Corvus coronoides).
