FARM ANIMAL welfare

HSI India have had success working towards banning battery cages for egg-laying hens.  Read more on this story here.

Factory Farming
The traditional view of farming is green fields full of grazing animals, or animals lying in straw in barns, with hens scratching around in the farmyard. Sadly this picture is far removed from the reality of life on the modern farm. The vast majority of farm animals never see the daylight or feel the sun on their backs. Millions of animals spend their entire lives in cages, stalls or huge, windowless sheds where they can barely move. The cramped conditions in which thousands of animals can be kept in one building is known as 'factory farming'.

Humane Choice Label
With the recent media coverage of dubious free range produce HSI wants to take the guesswork out of consumer decision making where animal welfare standards are concerned. There is only one ‘Humane Choice’ so there is no variation in standards and consumers can have full confidence in the integrity of the product. For more information including the Humane Choice Standards visit the Humane Choice website here.

Truth in Labelling
As consumer understanding and sentiment continues to grow in regards to animal welfare and the suffering of animals, many consumers are wanting to make informed choices on the animal-derived food products they purchase and are increasingly looking to organic and free range produce, among others, only to be met with an endless variety of undefined terms or labels that are completely void of any information on the farm production method.

Live Exports
The long distance transport of live animals for slaughter is big business around the world, despite clear evidence of the welfare, food safety and meat quality problems it causes.

Over 60 billion farm animals are reared for food every year worldwide. Most are transported for slaughter, often over long distances within and between countries, on unnecessary journeys taking days, weeks or even months. This massive movement of live animals means that at any given moment, more animals are travelling around the globe than people. The practice is both cruel and unnecessary! INTERNATIONAL INITIATIVES
HSI, along with other major NGOs, have signed an innovative declaration to set up the Transatlantic Animal Welfare Council, which will assist in developing higher standards in animal welfare between the EU and USA.

Eurogroup for Animals is the latest to announce their involvement. For further information click here.

an unnatural life span
Slaughtering animals at a young age is standard practice in farming - this Infographic demonstrates the point that the natural life span far exceeds the slaughter age for each species.
