PROTECTING WILDLIFE AND HABITATS

HSI has worked closely with many environment ministers over the decades since we launched our office in Australia in 1994 to reform and refine laws and policies protecting Australia’s unique and wonderful wildlife and their habitats.

HSI worked with former environment minister Senator Robert Hill to herald in the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act in 1999.

HSI has been responsible for the scientific nominations of 73 threatened species and 27 threatened ecological communities listed under the EPBC Act.

Our threatened ecological community listings amount to protection of more than a third of the total currently recognised at the Federal level. Once listed species and ecological communities are protected from inappropriate development and their recovery is prioritised – although HSI has to remain ever vigilant to see that protection and recovery is achieved.
