INTERNATIONAL CONSERVATION TREATIES

Whether we are defending the moratorium on commercial whaling at the International Whaling Commission (IWC) or preventing the ivory trade at the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), HSI will always be found at high level international treaty meetings presenting the case for stronger protection of animals and habitat. Working with our international colleagues, we have a talented team of lawyers, scientists and political lobbyists, all dedicated to ensuring the governments of the world save species from extinction and treat animals humanely. We are also key advocates in the negotiation of free trade agreements between countries defending the interests of the environment and animal welfare.

Treaties where HSI plays an active role include:

  • UN Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR)
  • Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna (CCSBT)
  • UN Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Flora and Fauna (CITES)
  • UN Convention for the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS or the Bonn Convention)
  • International Whaling Commission (IWC)
  • UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)
