ACTION ALERT - 17 november 2008
Tell Australian Government to save the reef
ACT by 1 December 2008
Scientists are warning that increases in sea surface temperatures between 1-3°C risks devastation for the Great Barrier Reef with frequent coral bleaching events and mass mortality of corals.
The Australian Government is currently deciding what global targets it will aim for in international negotiations and how far they will commit Australia to reducing our greenhouse gas emissions. It is currently considering aiming for an international consensus to stabilise mean global temperature rises between 2 to 3°C. If these targets are achieved they are unlikely to save coral reefs.
We do not know whether it is possible to stabilise global temperature rises at 1, 2 or 3°C but think of it this way: if we wanted to cross a river that was a mile wide, would we ask our engineers to build a bridge that was half a mile long?
The Australian community needs to tell the Prime Minister that we want a future for a country that includes a healthy Great Barrier Reef.
If you write one letter this year, write it to the Prime Minister of Australia, Mr Kevin Rudd, and ask that he commits our country to aim to save the Great Barrier Reef by working for an international consensus to stabilise global temperature rises at 1°C.
If Australia is not prepared to work for a consensus to save its own Great Barrier Reef, what hope is there that the rest of the world will commit to saving it?
The Hon Kevin Rudd
Prime Minister Parliament House
