HSI welcomes emergency listings Bill
Humane Society International (HSI) today welcomed moves by Greens Senator Larissa Waters to fast-track proposals for emergency listing of threatened species and ecological communities where they are at risk from a significant and imminent adverse impact under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act.
“Many of our species and communities have very little known about them, and yet are threatened by developments or other impacts. The current listing process under our environmental laws is a thorough process which takes many years to reach a conclusion.” said Alexia Wellbelove of HSI. “Our environmental laws need to be able to respond rapidly when there are significant threats facing a particular species or community. HSI therefore commends the Greens for introducing the Bill and urges all Parties to support the legislation.”
HSI has considerable expertise in species nominations and ecological communities under the EPBC Act, having been responsible for a large number of threatened species and ecological community nominations, and subsequent listings.
