31 May 2011 - HSI supports calls to ban live export

31 May 2011

The ABC’s Four Corners program on Monday night brought home to all Australians the horror that has been the live export trade for decades now.

The Australian Government MUST act immediately to ban the live export of Australian sheep and cattle. It is totally unacceptable that Australian animal welfare organisations have once again had to expose the horrors of these overseas abattoirs.

HSI calls on the Prime Minister, Julia Gillard and the Minister for Agriculture, Senator Joe Ludwig to immediately intervene and ban this trade. HSI understands that Senator Ludwig has called for an investigation, and that live export industry took pre-emptive steps days before the Four Corners Program aired the damning footage of the situation in Indonesia to stop exports to the three (3) Indonesian abattoirs featured. The Minister has now banned export to eleven (11) abattoirs. However, 80% of Australia’s live cattle exports are to Indonesia, and there are many other abattoirs that were not part of the program - therefore live exports to ALL Indonesia abattoirs MUST be banned immediately while a full investigation is undertaken.

HSI remains completely opposed to the export of live sheep and cattle from Australia.  With modern refrigeration methods, there is no reason for animals not to be slaughtered in Australia by suitably trained staff that are adhering to Australian animal welfare codes, with the meat frozen and then exported.
