HSI welcomes Australias signing of international shark agreement
Humane Society International (HSI) today welcomed news that Australia has become the 14th signatory to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the Conservation of Migratory Sharks under the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS). The MoU aims to increase international coordination to ensure action is taken to protect migratory sharks. Migratory sharks are inherently vulnerable to a number of threats, particularly fishing activities and trade. Coordinated international action is required in order to address these threats and work to improve species’ conservation status.
“We welcome Australia’s signing of the MoU to protect migratory sharks, and we ask Australia to take this opportunity to ensure conservation actions to protect the world’s migratory sharks are urgently implemented” said Alexia Wellbelove of Humane Society International.
“HSI looks forward to working with the Australian Government towards concerted conservation action on migratory sharks in Australian waters and beyond.”
HSI representatives attended all the meetings in the lead up to finalisation of the MoU.
