Exemption of WA shark program a complete disgrace
Late yesterday evening the Federal Government published a notification on its website, stating that the WA Government had been granted an exemption under federal environment law to go ahead with their ‘shark mitigation policy’. This despite significant public opposition to the proposed policy, requirements under federal environment law, and international obligations to protect the great white shark.
“The exemption of the WA shark policy is a complete disgrace,” said Humane Society International’s Senior Program Manager Alexia Wellbelove. “The proposed policy and consideration by the Federal Environment Minister lacks any real scientific approach, and fails to sufficiently consider the wider marine implications of the program.”
“This exemption demonstrates the complete failure of the Federal Government to protect our most precious species and fulfil our international environmental obligations, for the price of a policy which we do not believe will have the desired impact of reducing risk for people, which is its stated purpose,” continued Ms Wellbelove.
“HSI reiterates its calls on both Premier Barnett and Minister Hunt to end this farce of a program and instead invest in research to help better educate the public on how to reduce the risk of shark bites,” concluded Ms Wellbelove.
The approval by Minister Hunt is dated the 10th January 2014. HSI is seeking further information on why the public release of this approval was delayed by 10 days.
