HSI supporter shaves her head to fundraise for the Dancing Bears

HSI Supporter Kate pre-shave for the Bears

Humane Society International would like to share the story of our courageous supporter who was willing to go to any length to raise money to help the suffering dancing bears of India.

Back in June this year, we received a phone call from Kate saying that she wanted to organise a "shave off" to raise money for the dancing bears. She was going to gain awareness of their plight whatever it took it seems. We sent her some literature on the program, all the time wondering will she really go through with this. She certainly did and she raised an amazing $915!!

Kate sent us some photos of the shave off which she was happy to share.

This is what she wrote:

Hi Jackie

Have attached photos of shave off. You'll notice I didn't go absolutely bald, just a number 3 on the clippers but enough for people to be happy that they got their money's worth (hee, hee). A few of the nurses said they'd pay me 'not' to cut my hair.

After I received the literature you provided I created a flyer & placed them around the various wards at Kempsey District Hospital where I work as a nurse. Kempsey is situated on the mid-north coast between Port Macquarie & Coffs Harbour & whilst it's definitely not an economically wealthy town it is certainly a generous one with lots of fund-raisers achieving great success.

All of the money was given by staff at the hospital who felt that it was a worthy cause, particularly after learning about the plight of the 'dancing bears' through the pamphlets HSI provided. I chose to support HSI because of the amazing work that they do & was particularly moved by the rescue & rehabilitation of the dancing bears.

An important factor to most of the people who donated money was that the former handlers of the bears & their families were given the opportunity to change their lifestyle, no longer dependent of the animals for their living.

Many thanks & keep up the brilliant work,

Kate.

KateKateThank you Kate! You have certainly made a wonderful contribution to help these bears enjoy a life free from suffering in the sanctuary.

All of us at HSI congratulate Kate on her courage and determination driven by empathy for the suffering bears and renewed hope for the future for the families.
