Voted one of Australia's most collectable contemporary artists, Adam Cullen is perhaps best known for winning the Archibald Prize in 2000 for his portrait of actor David Wenham. Adam presents an intensity of imagery loaded with irony and humour. His provocative works combine pathos and humour which plays a delicate balancing act between ‘punk brashness' and relentless honesty. Adam is top of the Art Gallery of NSW's Contemporary “12 hottest list” and since 1993 has had 13 solo exhibitions, 5 group exhibitions and a lengthy bibliography of art discourse behind him. He raised eyebrows by collaborating with the infamous Mark “Chopper” Read for their children's book Hooky the Cripple. Adam has exhibited extensively throughout Australia and the world in state and regional galleries. He represented Australia in the Sao Paulo Biennalle in Brazil in 2002 and is represented by the Tolarno Galleries in Melbourne, Greenaway Gallery in Adelaide, Kaliman Gallery in Paddington and Michael Reid in Redfern. Public and private collections include Art Gallery of NSW, Australian National Gallery Canberra, The National Gallery of Victoria, The Art Gallery of SA, The Art Gallery of WA and Sir Elton John. In mid 2008 Cullen's work was the subject of a major survey exhibition, Adam Cullen. Let's Get Lost, curated by the Art Gallery of New South Wales and was accompanied by a major catalogue published by the gallery. |
