action alerts

  • Action Alerts offer background facts on an issue in addition to a summary of the current problems, a list of names and addresses of people /groups to write to, and the most important points to cover in your letter.
  • Watch out for the deadlines for action alerts. If the deadline has passed contact HSI to see if writing a letter is still important.
  • Writing letters is a very effective way of spreading the message about animal rights and conservation. By writing to newspapers, magazines, and other media, to politicians and to businesses, we can educate others and even influence policy.
  • Remember if you do help HSI in this way be sure to send our office a copy of the replies to your letters - our campaigners use them in their work.

GREYHOUNDS NEED YOUR HELP:
Humane Society International, along with other animal welfare organisations including Grey2K USA, Animals Asia, Animals Australia and ANIMA, is concerned over the export of greyhounds from Australia to countries such as Macau and China, where welfare standards fail to protect them from cruelty and suffering.

A single dog track called the Canidrome in Macau is a worn out facility that lacks even the most basic welfare standards for dogs.  Dogs who are not racing are confined in tiny cages, and those who do may get injured.  If they don't perform well they are simply destroyed.  Around 400 dogs are killed each year and every greyhound arriving at the track is dead within three years. Australia continues to export dogs to Macau knowing their fate, and 309 greyhounds were sent in 2011.

HSI believes the export of greyhounds to such countries needs to end and has written to the Government, the Macau Chief Executive, and Greyhounds Australasia to voice our opinion.  Click these links to view the letters we have sent to Hon Joe Ludwig (55.1 kb), to the Macau Chief Executive (116.6 kb), and to the CEO of Greyhounds Australasia (32.4 kb).  You can add your voice too by writing similar letters to help stop greyhounds being exported to these countries.
